Columbine Killers: Oh Dear

When one looks at some of the newly released documents from Columbine killers Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, it becomes clear that A) These kids were influenced by violent movies and videogames, but more importantly they were B) Gigantic morons.
In some journal entries, such as the above list of ethnic slurs compiled by Harris, it also makes one wonder if the two murderers at one time shared crib notes with the criminally unfunny Carlos Mencia.

teenage males, for whatever reason, are often inclined towards this kind of bizarre, hateful nihilism that de-values the lives of others. Its egotism mixed with intense cynicism towards others that feeds the notion of self-importance.

There was a shooting recently at a techno party here in seattle (several were killed and the young gunman predictably shot himself) that sort of shocked people again, i dont know why, it was the same kind of thing. It was the same kind of nihilism.

Its one of those cruel ironies in life that the people who are most cynical, who think the least of others and most of themselves (as a result of some percieved evils in society or humanity) are the ones who create the greatest evil in society and humanity.

Hi Patrick,

Carlos Mencia is definitely unfunny, and that hateful list is just plain sad.

Funny post, though, so it all evens out. :)

...

I hope you're well!

Happy Tuesday,

m. keiser, I think there's more to it than normal adolescent anti-social tendencies. The egotism-cynicism mix is a symptom of something else, possibly a socio-econo-cultural element that mixes especially poorly with testosterone (something Mike Moore touched on with Bowling for Columbine). The pressure valves for anger stew in this country are for some reason much stronger than they are in the rest of the world, and so the eruptions are greater. In keeping with this, I think comedians like Dave Chapelle and even Carlos Mencia, as bad as he is, are actually doing us all a huge favor by releasing some of that pressure before it gets dangerous.

I think anything can be funny. There is very smart racial humor (David Cross, Paul Mooney).
Mencia ain't smart.

Hi Alex! Let's have fun and be friends soon. Nick, me, you, Rowan, Dave and others are due for a high stakes game of cardplayin' soon!
